What Does it Take to Organize a New Credit Union ?
It's easier to organize now than it has been in past years, but it still takes a lot of time and energy. Basically, the deposit insurance fund will not approve a group which cannot become financially self-supporting. Generally this means having 2,000 - 3,000 members who do enough saving and borrowing to cover the cost of operations, plus a competitive savings dividend. Each credit union needs about a dozen volunteers willing to commit their time for three or more years, without financial compensation.
